The Body Image Shift is a free 3 day event aimed at helping you on your path towards Body Neutrality. Body Neutrality is when you can look at your body and be neutral about it - no hate, not even love, you just see it as “this is the body I have” and that's it.
The Body Love movement has gained momentum in the last few years which is amazing. However, for me it was very hard to go from feeling so much loathing about my body to absolutely loving it. Instead of feeling like I had to jump the Grand Canyon to get from Body Hate to Body Love, instead I aimed for the safety zone of Body Neutrality that sits in the middle. And once I hit that point, I just kept on going to get to Body Love!
Women have been subjected to decades of conditioning that our value comes from our looks. We are bombarded every day with ads for diets, shakes, lotions and potions, makeup, miracle pills etc etc to make sure we are thin, young, tight and perfect. Heaven forbid if you go grey or get wrinkles! Signs of ageing are, apparently, the beginning of the end for a woman. Rather than embracing our later years, embracing the crone we are becoming, we are told we must do all we can to stop it.
Naturally it takes a great deal of work and time to change these ideas that have been a part of our lives since we were born. I have especially designed the Body Image Shift to push you in the right direction, to go beyond what you might normally be comfortable with and see what comes up for you.
I am a woman with a fat body, so that is my experience. However, this challenge is for all women of all shapes and sizes. One of my favourite quotes is “in a society that profits from your self doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act" by Caroline Caldwell. Self doubt about your body is not limited to women of a particular size. It's something all women, regardless if they are a size 10 or 28, will have experienced.
So much of our current thoughts are about how we look, how we should look, and what we are meant to do to look like the 'ideal' woman. Imagine if those thoughts were no longer there? If you didn't give any time to thoughts about what your body looks like? What might you think about instead?
The body you have right now is the only one you are going to get in this lifetime. Life is short. Go and enjoy it.
I stand on the shoulders of the women who have started and continue to do this work. My biggest inspirations are Taryn Brumfitt, Amy Pence-Brown, Sonya Renee Taylor, Turia Pitt and Celeste Barber.
How does it work?
If you know a woman who would also benefit from the Body Image Shift, please share it with her. The more women who start to think about their bodies in a more neutral way, the better!
